Marianne awoke to a loud crash from above her, from her fatherâs bedchamber. She threw off her covers and reached for the dagger that she had stashed under her pillow. Jumping off the bed, she ran out the door, down the hall, and up the flight of stairs. She paused for only a moment outside his door, wondering if perhaps she had overreacted. Another crash came from inside the room, and she threw open the door.
In the center of the room, her father was lying on his back, and a tall, muscular man was looming over him, choking him. She watched in horror as her father struggled to pry the manâs hands from his throat.
âUnhand him!â Marianne exclaimed as she ran up to the man and attempted to push him off her father. When that didnât work, she started pounding on his back, but the man barely acknowledged her.
He removed one hand from her fatherâs throat, and shoved her away, causing her to tumble to the floor.
âGo away, girl,â he growled. âThis does not concern you.â
She jumped up and declared, âIf you do not stop, I will be forced to stop you.â
Not surprisingly, the man ignored her, and she knew she had no choice but to act. Marianne was too close to him for any rotation to be effective. She decided to change tactics. Slowly, she pulled her hand back, so sheâd have enough power for a strong, straight throw.
âThis is your last warning,â she warned, hoping she didnât have to kill another person.
The man chuckled cruelly, but his hold on her father did not ease, and she saw that he was growing weaker by the moment.
Marianne transferred her weight to her left leg while simultaneously bending her wrist back towards her forearm. She whipped her arm forward, released the dagger, and watched as it plunged deep into the manâs back.
The man immediately dropped his arms from around her fatherâs throat and thrashed about as he attempted to remove the dagger from his back. After he stopped twisting, he staggered back to the corner of the room, staring at her in shock. His shoulders started to slump, and blood trickled out of his mouth.
At that moment, Lord Harington came barging into the room and fired his pistol at the attacker, who collapsed to the floor.
Marianne didnât hesitate as she ran to her father and helped him into a seated position. âAre you all right, Father?â
âI shall live,â he assured her in a hoarse voice. âAbout time you showed up, Harington.â
âMy apologies. I had to race up from my study on the first level,â Lord Harington said, tucking his pistol into the waistband of his trousers.
She helped her father stand, and he moved to sit on his bed. âIt was a good thing my daughter came to my rescue. If Iâd waited for you, I would be dead.â
Lord Harington chuckled as he closed the door. âYouâre getting soft in your old age. I remember a time when you could have fought off two attackers easily.
